ApartmentPhile: My Next Place Option I.

Even though I may not have a place of my own just quite yet (fingers crossed that I can afford something in the next few months)...a girl can dream! And I am definitely one who loves apartments and all their quirks- hence the new ApartmentPhile post label. So over the next few weeks, I wanted to share some of the apartment design styles that I've been throwing around (virtually of course) one of which will make it into my next tiny-ass apartment. The style featured below may be equal bits rustic, glam, chic and industrial but it makes a very big statement with just a simple color palette. File as hard chic, option one.

Look of the Week: Closet Case.

I needed a little freshness on this rather blah Monday, and what better way to pump it up than with a turquoise wall? I must admit that I have lived in a turquoise room at one point in my life (long story short, not exactly my choosing) and even though it could be rather bright at times, it was definitely an instant mood lifter and made me dream of lounging on the beach. (Dying to go to Miami in the near future, can you tell?) And what more could you want than that? File as perk up!

Town or Country?

Big impact in a little space or room to breathe?

Mini seating area or multiple conversation areas?

Bar seating or extra large kitchen island with separate dining room?

Creative spacing or serene bedroom space?

Shared bathroom or double sinks?

If there is one argument I constantly have with boyfriends it would be the question of town or country? I would definitely consider myself to be a city girl; I love being able to walk downstairs and be in the center of the action, walking or taking public transportation wherever my heart desires. Living in town usually means sacrificing on space, but after cramming into many tiny apartments in the past five years I find myself attracted to the challenge of making everything work perfectly in as little square feet as possible. Maybe I'll come around to the endless space of the country eventually, but for now I'm in love with my city. Which one do you prefer? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Optical Overload.

What is the saying again...less is more? Well I'm thinking more is more and what applies to fashion goes the same for home decor here. So why not pack a punch in what is usually one of the smallest rooms and go all out? Wallpapering a bathroom may have been something your grandmother would have done, but that doesn't mean it can't be fabulous in its own right. A little bit of chintz never hurt anyone. File under more please.

Office Space.

There are some days when I really just want to smash my printer with a baseball bat, and although I thought today would be one of those days (first midterm of the year and return of first paper) it somehow managed to all go smoothly. Not that I still wouldn't have enjoyed smashing my printer anyways; it is broken. Regardless, the workspace is something that I've always struggled with in terms of placement. I can't stand to put it anywhere close to my bed. All those unread books and unwritten papers stacked on top of it give me nightmares, and due to the fact that I am spatially challenged (see here) that would mean putting it in my closet, which let's face it, my clothes would not allow. My current solution is a $20 table (not joking plus two sawhorses) that doubles as a desk and dining table looking out over my bay window. One day I'm sure I'll have a workspace as fabulous as one of these but until I make that commitment, at the dining table is where I'll be. Alas, the printer is still living in my closet until I get a new one, in which case I will happily take my old one out to practice my swing.

Dining In.

Living in apartments well under one thousand square feet has not allowed me the privilege to have a kitchen much larger than a matchbook so it comes as no surprise that I am ecstatic about the idea of one day having one big enough to fit a table, some chairs and possibly even (gasp!) a bench. Whether it's a farmhouse table with some vintage chairs thrown around, an island to rest my elbows on or just a small nook complete with a table and comfortable bench, I've always been fond of sitting next to the warm oven and dining in...even if I am eating take-out. File under my future kitchen.

Step away from the futon.

I would consider myself an expert when it comes to living in studio apartments, and I absolutely love having as little space as possible. Sure, I know it sounds insane and it does require some creative storage solutions, but how much space does one person really need? I think Simone at Tiny-Ass Apartment would agree with me. What makes all these studios gorgeous is their restrained color palettes, clean floors, military-like organization, lots of bright natural light and a touch of something unexpected: from a beanbag, yellow blanket, black lampshades, mammoth mirror or curtained off daybed.
